Deep Research
I throw myself into the challenge of asking the right questions until I truly understand the people, purpose, systems, and opportunities behind every project. Whether researching ecosystems, audiences, user experiences, or organizations, I believe the strongest solutions begin with genuine understanding—not assumptions.
Selected Research & Case Studies
Mirror Lake Watershed Initiative
Local newspaper article documenting the watershed initiative initiated by research from Jen Thompson who convinced her UNH limnology class to studying Mirror Lake.
Data from the limnology study of Mirror Lake, that illustrates the cyanobacteria at different depths within the lake. The green spike shows the spike of Oscillatoria – a serious threat to the lake and all life around it.
What began as a vacation interrupted by the lake’s first cyanobacteria bloom turned into years of independent research, scientific collaboration, and community action to better understand and protect the watershed.
- Investigated watershed maps and historical data to identify potential sources of degradation.
- Brought together UNH researchers, the Center for Freshwater Biology, and local stakeholders to expand scientific study.
- Helped support long-term lake monitoring, successful grant funding, and broader public awareness.
Forest Ecology Research Publication
Thomas D Lee & Jennifer H Thompson published in Science Direct.
Gorgeous White Pine forests we were studying
Co-designed field research, performed laboratory analysis and statistical modeling, and co-authored a scientific publication exploring forest ecosystems.
- Designed and carried out field sampling.
- Conducted laboratory analysis and statistical interpretation.
- Translated research findings into a published scientific study.
Environmental Systems & GIS
Jennifer Thompson led the State of NH GIS team for the huge multijurisdictional Spill of National Significance (SONS) in 2010
Jennifer Thompson’s role in the Incident Command System for SONS 2010
Accepted a GIS position at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), mastered ArcGIS independently, and quickly became a key contributor to statewide environmental response planning.
- Self-taught ArcGIS while working full time and applied it to groundwater remediation and hazardous waste investigations.
- Supported Situation Unit operations through GIS analysis for statewide environmental emergency planning and response.
- Developed NHDES’s first web-based GIS mapping application for oil spill response during the Spill of National Significance (SONS) 2010 exercise, then trained GIS staff to use the system and operate within the Incident Command System. Also became an expert for the ERMA mapping tool developed by UNH and NOAA and utilized them both simultaneously at the SONS event.
Enterprise User Research
At Regroup, a SaaS company, I won the client support team award for best researcher and came up with. many ideas on how to add integrations and make the service better.
After leading the GIS based tool creation, went on at Regroup to create content for email campaigns and marketing all the tech tools.
Researched enterprise communication needs to better understand users, organizations, and the challenges they were trying to solve.
- Received Regroup’s Excellence in Research Award for product and user research.
- Co-led research and development of a map-based location alerting feature with global engineering teams.
- Translated customer needs into product improvements that strengthened emergency communication capabilities.
Historical Research
newspaper article I dug up at the historical society that reveals the secrets to pre- Sands By The Sea
Deep online research led me to find some very old pictures of the hotel
Researching the history of a historic coastal property to uncover its origins, ownership timeline, and stories that strengthen guest experience, digital storytelling, and long-term brand identity.
- Conducting archival research using historical records, newspapers, deeds, and local sources.
- Connecting historical research with website strategy, guest engagement, and brand storytelling.
- Building a verified historical timeline to preserve and share the property’s legacy.
